The American Electric

Michael Juan Nunez and The American Electric....what can be said about this band?

Chad Willis on Bass and Backing Vocals, Clint "Chief" Redwing on Drums and Backing Vocals, and MJN on Guitar and Vocals.

Ladies and Gentlemen this is a rock band from deep south Louisiana.

It would be easy to just say that, put it in a nice neat package and be done...but let's consider that each of these guys came up on the music scene as sidemen for a combined list that includes Harry Hypolite, Henry Gray, Sherman Robertson, Lil Buck Senegal, Zachary Richard, Roddie Romero and The Hub City Allstars, Gatemouth Brown, John Mooney, Ms. Carroll Fran, D.L. Menard, Chubby Carrier, Lee Allen Zeno, Dege Legg and The Brethren, C.C. Adcock, David Egan...we could continue but you get the idea.

This is a rock band who's roots run DEEP.

The guys play with conviction that only comes from many, many, many nights throwing down from roadside dives, to the biggest festival stages in the world.
Self proclaimed innovators of a style they have dubbed 'Marsh Rock'...you can hear elements of Zydeco, Cajun, The British Invasion, New Orleans R&B and funk, and of course the blues. From the Delta, to the hills of North Mississippi...to the big Texas guitar sound of Austin icons...with names like Stevie, Jimmy, Derek, Denny.
Heavy grooves, and crying, moaning, screaming guitar (not learned from books or videos, but straight from the source...Sonny Landreth, Lil' Buck Senegal, Harry Hypolite.....)

Again is there more that can be said?

Talking about music is like touching about color.
Go see the guys play....that's the best way to understand.
If you don't feel something, you might want to check your pulse...Just saying.
The boys are mean...in such a good way.

BIO

Michael Juan Nunez is one of those artists that can not be separated from his work. His name has become synonymous with raw passionate guitar.
It's in the music he makes, the songs he writes, the artwork he creates, the way he speaks, even in his devotion to his family and friends.
How does one find themselves in a position like that?
It's not something calculated.
It's from a lifetime pursuing elusive sounds, finding joy and beauty in things many people pass by...and from a relentless pursuit of knowledge about his craft.
Even after all of these years, Nunez will be the first to tell you he is still a student of music.
"It isn't possible to know all there is about music...or anything really. Things are constantly changing. One small thing can be the catalyst that sets off a chain reaction that completely changes the way we have looked at something our entire lives. Music is no different. As soon as someone says they know it all, they stop growing, and thus begin fading away. That's life...you are either growing or dying. I'm choosing to continue to grow at this point in my life."
No where is this more evident than on his new album "RISE". From the first sounds that buzz from the speakers, to the eruption that explodes as his band comes in on the album opener...to the 180 degree turn he takes on the following track, which is a 'feel good' message with a Caribbean overtone (and some very tasty nylon string guitar playing)...to the Z Z Top meets Guns and Roses meets R.L. Burnside "Lost It"...(AND KEEP IN MIND, we've just reached the 3rd track here!!!!) This album is a wild roller coaster ride of great songs, great sounds, creative arrangements, being played by some incredible musicians.
The album not only features Nunez's long time band "The American Electric" but also a handful of some of the very best talent Acadiana has to offer.

The outpouring of talent on the level of these musicians is a testament to the person Nunez is.
His name is well known in local circles and to a lesser extent in national circles of true music lovers who dug deep enough to uncover this hidden gem, but he is far from being a well known nationwide performer.
He chose instead to stay close to home and raise his two daughters (one of whom makes an appearance on two tracks of his new album) instead of a life on the road. He has toured with his band, as well as Roddie Romero and The Hub City All-Stars, Zachary Richard, and Brother Dege Legg and Brethren. These experiences have taken him all over the world, but in limited capacity.
As his ladies grow Nunez has begun expanding his reach.
It's conceivable that MJN could soon be a fixture on the national stage.
He is often compared to acts like 'The Black Keys', or Jack White, but Nunez says with an evil grin "Keep in mind, I was doing that stuff with The RiverBabys (The first band that Nunez fronted back in the mid 90's), and continued that path as a solo artist. Doing it when those guys were still scratching their asses, long before they even began playing. Those guys sound like me, not the other way around" with that he lets out a chuckle. He's half joking, but half way totally correct.
When asked if he regrets his choice to be a father rather than a music star...his eye brow cocks up and lets out a laugh that can only be described as "are you f$%#ing CRAZY?? Hell No!!!". My suspicions are correct as MJN states " Man, those kids...excuse me...those young ladies, were the best thing to ever happen to me. They made me see the world in a different light. I had another life depending on me. It's a love that I would literally lay down my own life for. Until you have something you would die for, I don't think that you can really live. Music has been a gift and it's been a burden...life is full of give and take...but it has taught me so much about life. I believe God has you where you are supposed to be at all times. It's up to us to open our eyes and see the gifts, and opportunities in each situation."
And with that statement if you would stick a guitar in his hands... you could see all that you need to know about this one of a kind artist.
